Operational Marine surface analysis using EUMETSAT'S Copernicus Marine Data Stream - Croatia

We will focus on the application of data from Sentinel-3, Jason-3, and use of associated data such as EUMETSAT's scatterometers.

This course is aimed at experts from operational centers with responsibilities to monitor the Mediterranean Sea (Met Area III), with all levels of experience in the use of satellite data for marine analysis propose.

It has two phases, an online (asynchronous) component with recorded lectures, modules, readings, quizzes, taking approximately three hours a week. This is followed by a workshop phase, with practical sessions, supported by lectures on how to make an efficient operational use of the data. Completion of the online phase is a prerequisite for the workshop.

This event is hosted by the JCOMM WIS/WIGOS Marine Meteorological Center for Adriatic Sea Area of the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service – DHMZ.

Course objectives

Participants will be able to:

• analyse the current surface conditions using scatterometer and altimeter data;
• monitor the evolution of the surface conditions;
• integrate these satellite data with data from numerical models, validating the model output;
• access and visualise the data;
• identify how the use of the wide range of products available from EUMETSAT, the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service and other Copernicus partners, can improve the quality of marine analysis.

Course content

The course is held in English and covers:

• Overview and practice on EUMETSAT's Copernicus Marine products with relevance to marine forecasting.
• Waves from Space (Altimeters).
• Winds from Space (Scatterometers).

Registration

Apply online by 20 May (registration required).

The event is limited to 20 people and selection will be based on the level of experience and relevant area of responsibility. Those selected will be informed by 24 May.

For the workshop phase, EUMETSAT can support a limited number of participants with travel or/and subsistence, this must be indicated at the time application. This is possible through support from the European Commission.

Participants are advised to have personal travel and medical insurance. EUMETSAT or DHMZ cannot accept responsibility for any incident during the course.
