The ECMWF’s mission is to:

  • produce numerical weather forecasts and monitor the Earth system
  • carry out scientific and technical research to improve forecasting skill
  • maintain an archive of meteorological data

What it does

In order to deliver on its mission, the ECMWF provides:

  • global numerical weather forecasts four times per day
  • air quality analyses
  • atmospheric composition monitoring
  • climate monitoring
  • ocean circulation analyses
  • hydrological predictions
  • fire risk predictions

The ECMWF operates two services on behalf of the European Union’s Copernicus Programme: the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

How we work together

The ECMWF is a major user of EUMETSAT’s data and products, which are key inputs into its weather forecasting models.

EUMETSAT and the ECMWF maintain a strong relationship, meeting and exchanging information on a regular basis. This cooperation facilitates the generation and production of a comprehensive range of meteorological, oceanographic and atmospheric products of a quality recognised and valued worldwide.

EUMETSAT and the ECMWF work closely together through the European Union’s Copernicus programme. The ECMWF is the delegated entity for operating the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring and Climate Change services.

EUMETSAT provides these services with satellite-derived data from its own satellite missions, Sentinel missions operated by EUMETSAT and third-party missions.

EUMETSAT and the ECMWF are partners in the European Weather Cloud initiative and, together with the European Space Agency, have key roles in the European Union’s Destination Earth initiative.
